Visioconférence : pourquoi le son fatigue et comment améliorer le confort acoustique

Video Conferencing: Why Sound Becomes Tiring and How to Improve Acoustic Comfort

Video conferencing has become part of everyday work life. Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, client calls, team updates, remote presentations… we spend a lot of time speaking through a screen. Yet when a meeting becomes tiring, we often blame the length of the call, the level of concentration required, or the workload. We think less often about sound.

And yet, sound quality plays a major role in the comfort of a video conference. Muffled audio, a voice that echoes, constant background noise, or reverberation in the room can quickly make listening more difficult. Even when the image is perfect, poor sound can be exhausting.

The problem does not always come from the microphone

We often assume that a better microphone is enough to improve a virtual meeting. A good microphone can definitely help. But if the room is very echoey, the microphone also captures that reverberation. It records the voice, but also the sound bouncing off the walls, ceiling, windows, or floor.

As a result, the voice becomes less clear. It may sound more distant, harsher, or slightly metallic. Other participants have to work harder to understand, and the meeting becomes more demanding for everyone.

Echo increases listening fatigue

In a space with many hard surfaces, sound lingers longer. This is called reverberation. In video conferencing, reverberation becomes even more noticeable because the microphone compresses and transmits the sound of the room.

A poorly balanced sound environment can create:

  • reduced voice clarity
  • an echo effect
  • faster listening fatigue
  • difficulty staying focused
  • less fluid conversations

People interrupt each other more often, repeat themselves, and speak louder. Technology is not always the problem. Sometimes, it is simply the room’s acoustics working against us.

Simple ways to improve sound quality

The good news is that you do not need to turn your office into a recording studio. To improve sound quality in video conferencing, the goal is mainly to reduce sound reflections around you.

A few simple ideas:

  • avoid sitting in front of a large bare wall
  • add a rug if the floor is hard
  • use curtains near windows
  • introduce textiles, cushions, or other absorbent materials
  • place an acoustic panel or textile acoustic artwork near the speaking area

The idea is to add materials that absorb part of the sound, instead of letting it bounce around the room.

Better sound, more human conversations

Good acoustics make remote meetings more comfortable. The voice becomes clearer, listening requires less effort, and conversations feel more natural. You feel less drained after a long day of video calls.

Improving sound is not only a technical matter. It is a way to create a calmer, more professional, and more human work environment, even at a distance.
